I would say my job isn’t easy and sometimes I really don’t know where to start.
The thing that makes my job hard is that there is so much to consider. Also everything takes a long time to do and we don’t have unlimited time to find the right answer.
But the best thing to do in those situations, I find, is to try and make a list of everything to consider, then speak to lots of people to work out what actually is important and what order to try and things also. A second opinion always goes a long way, better to work something out with other people than to use up lots of time on the wrong thing.
It can be pretty hard sometimes. Technically a spaceraft can be quite complex – it has a lot of tasks it needs to carry out in space and these tasks need to be done without breaking down since we can’t get into space to fix it. Writing the code to perform these tasks, things like getting one bit of the spacecraft to talk to another, or telling it how to take a picture or how to change its orbit is usually the hardest thing I do. Luckily there are lots of people in my team who you can talk to when you have a problem. It can also be hard work with long hours but it always feels worthwhile in the end because you’re working as a part of a team of very enthusiastic people who want the mission to succeed.
