Do you mean Design and Technology? That’s basically what engineering is, so if you’re already doing DT and enjoying it you’ll probably enjoy engineering! Engineers basically design new technology, or at least design ways to work with current technology in different ways. Where I work we build satellites so we have to design them from scratch and then build them. We tend to use technology that already exists but maybe in different ways than you’d normally use it. For example we built a satellite from a smartphone. We realised that a smartphone has a lot of what a satellite needs – a way to communicate, a computer processor, a camera, a gyroscope for stability – so we decided to see if it would work in space. Engineering is all about creativity, just like DT.
Design and Technology is really important for my job:
I use tecnical drawings to make sure the computer models are just right. I also make technical drawings to tell other people where I want to put thermal blankets and where I want to put a certain type of paint.
Other people use more elements of DT, like testing out materials to make sure they have the right one.
We also review all our designs, to make sure they’re going to work and that all the different parts work together.
DT is very similar to engineering, you learn the theory of how things work build those things, then try to use new theories to build things better, or more efficiently.
