I think its being curious. I was always curious when I was young – I wanted to know how things worked, why things were the way they were, whether it could be different. That curiosity is key to an engineer, seeing how the world works, how it could be more efficient.
I agree with Rhys – being curious makes such a difference – for both science and engineering.
I also think being creative is important – engineering is working out ways of doing things – sometimes what you want to do cannot be achieved, so you need to be creative and come up with lots of options.
