Clouds do a lot of things:
they’re white, so they tend to reflect sunlight really well – which means we don’t all get sunburn all the time – the planet would be really hot without clouds – so perhaps life would never have started without them.
As you said, they provide water to different areas – so that allows plants (and so other things) to grown outside of just the sea.
They also scatter light – which means that the sky would look fairly different without them.
CLouds also help trap heat into the planet – they are a bit like a blanket – not too hot (reflecting enough sunlight so we don’t over-heat) and not too cold (not letting all the heat out). I cover my spacecraft in foil blankets (like you see at marathons only with more layers) to exactly the same thing!
It should be said that there are more clouds around now – because of aeroplanes. Clouds need something to start from, they can’t grow out of nothing, and the exhaust fumes from aeroplanes has meant there are more things for clouds to get started on – so more clouds!
I love this question – it got me thinking a lot. As Katie said, clouds are the main way we regulate temperature on Earth and our main indication of what the atmosphere is doing. Also, if there were no clouds it would probably mean that there was very little water left, so as you said, Earth would become a barren wasteland. I think clouds are important for thinking too – cloud watching is a good way to let your mind wander and form patterns sub conciously, at least that’s what I’ve found. If you’re interested in clouds I recommend a book called ‘the cloud spotter’s guide’ – it tells you all about how clouds form and some interesting historical stories.
