That’s a tough question!
From a lifestyle perspective the great thing about my job is:
– not bad pay, I have enough for a nice holiday at least once a year and to afford things I would like sometimes
– flexible working – I can come in and go home when I like, so I can fit work around others I want to do
From a “why do this job over other jobs that also have that” perspective:
– it’s challenging, I’m never bored because there’s always something else to get stuck into
– it’s really social, I work with lots of people, we all know our own section, so we have to work together to make the thing work
– I get to design stuff that goes to space!
I’d say it’s a mixture of things. Thee people I work with – everyone is just really friendly and happy to help out, even if it’s not their area of expertise, and that makes it a really enjoyable place to work which is important. Also the challenge of the job – it can be hard and sometimes a little scary when you begin a new project and you’re not exactly sure how you’re going to make it work – but this makes it all the more satisfying when you finally come up with a solution and see you module working. I recently watched a test where my module burnt through the harness holding a solar panel to the spacecraft, and watching the solar panel unfold because of something I’d built was really exciting. I think the best best bit is knowing that it’s going to be doing that in space and working for the next 7 or so years.
