Nearly all of the time I feel good about my job! I get to work with some very talented people in a good working atmosphere and I get to design things which will be part of big projects which make the news!
I like the work – the software production – that I do. I like the flexible working that the job gives. Universities are very good in this respect. They give their staff much more freedom than engineers would get in industry.
However, my university has a problem in the way they employ engineers in science. There is no promotion path for somebody who just does engineering – no way to become a professor, for instance. Somebody in my position can only get promoted if they do science research and teaching, or management, *as well* as engineering, and there just isn’t time for me to do all that. So I’ve gone as high as I can and I just have to live with it. French universities have a better scheme for employing engineers and the UK could learn from that.
