It’s the chance to make things and particularly to make *systems* that work. I can make small, separate things as a hobby, but if I want to make large systems I need to work in a funded team with specialists.
I think what I enjoy most about engineering is the end result! Nearly always (after a lot of hard work) you get to say ‘I designed that’ .. and it’s something real that you can see and touch and appreciate how it might have solved a problem. Sometimes at the start of a project, you can think, ‘this will never work’ or ‘this is too hard to work out’ but when you have been doing engineering for a while you think of all the stuff that you designed and it got made and it works and then you think ‘we’ll definitely make this happen’.
