When I was younger, I wanted software development to become “proper engineering”* instead of “messin’ about with ‘puters and breaking things” which is the current state of the art. I wanted a job that would help that happen.
It hasn’t happened and it probably won’t happen in my working lifetime. It might well happen in yours, *if* you and your generation choose to make it happen. So no pressure there. 🙂
* “Proper engineering”, IMHO, means “I know that this will work because I know why it will work”. Most coders can’t honestly say that today.
I guess my dream job was and is this one! I worked on the design of an instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope. Although it was many years of hard work, when the telescope gets launched in 2019 I am going to get really excited……and maybe a little bit nervous, just like the engineers and scientists who I worked with who will be at the control centre! Right now I’m getting to work on the design of the world’s largest telescope and that will also definitely be on the news when it points to the sky in 2024!
