When I finished my training as a scientist, I found that I was better at making computer systems than actually doing science. There aren’t many jobs for research astronomers, and I couldn’t easily get work. There was a good job available for systems engineering at an observatory, so I took it and have been doing engineering ever since. That was probably the best thing for me, but without a time machine we’ll never know for sure.

There are a lot of computer people in the physical sciences who used to be researchers but changed jobs to get regular work.
