Geotechnics was part of my civil engineering degree at university. I also did classes in Geology and Rock Mechanics which I use for my job. So I hear about civil engineering at a school’s career fair and I quite like that there was still so much variety of types of engineering that I could do if I studied it at university.
If I hadn’t chosen geotechnical engineering, I would likely have gone into the water industry and been involved in designing and building water and wastewater treatment plants and associated pipe networks.
I can’t say that I knew it was the right job for me when I started looking. I like my geotechnics classes and I found it straight-forward (not quite easy, but understandable), so I thought it would be a good start. I have found that I have always enjoyed it and get things done well, so that’s what makes it the right job for me.
