      Hi Dev,

      The best advice I can give you is to work hard and get the best grades that you can in your GCSE’s – Maths, Technology, Science and English are very important. After this, there are a few different paths you can take – you could study A-Levels and then go on to University or you could enroll in a Modern Apprenticeship in whatever type of engineering you think you would enjoy.

      There is no clear way in which to become an engineer but all engineers worked hard at school – If you can do it too, you won’t go go far wrong!! Speak to your school careers adviser for more details on A-Levels and Modern Apprenticeships.

      I took a pretty typical route to getting my job- GCSE’s, A levels (Maths, Chemistry, Physics) then I did Mechanical Engineering at university but like Al said there are many different ways to get into engineering including becoming an apprentice straight after school.

      It is important to get good grades but also to have an interest in things which are not taught at school or college, this will really make you stand out in front of employers as they want to hire someone who will really enjoys what they do because this means they will work really hard. For example if you are interested in cars and becoming an automotive engineer- watch motorsport racing, build model cars and read up about the latest cars at motor shows (and I highly recommend going if you get the chance). All these things are taken into account when you are sitting in an interview!
