What is mechanical engineering, and is it the next step up from aeronautical engineering?

  Mechanical Engineers and Aeronautical Engineers have a distinct difference. A Mechanical Engineer is an engineer that has a broad understanding of engineering but does not specialise in a particular field of engineering. I am an Aeronautical Engineer which means that im a mechanical engineer that specialises in Aeronautics (Aircraft).
  
  It is not really a step up, Some engineers choose to specialise in one area like i do but other choose to cover engineering generally. I hope this helps you understand it a little better!
