There are quite a few funded projects out there currently that need people’s time, so I would help out with them if I can find some spare time.
For example I like – http://www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/home.cfm. The next one is in Birmingham very soon. I know that the Institution of Civil Engineers stand and the Institution of Sturctural Engineers stand regularly look for volunteers to help out.
I also help out with STEMnet which asks engineers to go into schools for careers fairs and sometimes even to do engineering experiments (my favourite type!) which don’t need funding.
I’m a STEMNet Ambassador, so I will carry on helping to make science and engineering more fun as the opportunities present themselves. I am hoping to start working with a school near where I live to help them do more Science and maybe help them with Maths too.
I’m also helping at the Big Bang fair (maybe I’ll see you there Ivanka!). And I have been helping the Smallpeice trust (http://www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk/) putting together activities for school kids to get involved in engineering- we had a competition recently where the kids had to build small electric cars and manoeuvre them around various obstacle courses which I really enjoyed (especially the judging).
As part of Jaguar Land Rovers corporate social responsibility they are very keen to get children interested in STEM.
I think the point of this process is to give you guys an understanding of what we, as engineers, actually do. If we don’t win, its not a problem because if you take just one piece of knowledge away from this process then we are all winners. I hope you are enjoying this scheme so far and hopefully i’ll see you in the chat room soon!
