No didn’t have to re-take any. The way it tends to work is that people look at your latest record. i.e. if you have just finished your GCSEs people look at these grades. Once you have done your A-levels, they matter more than the GCSE, once you got your degree, people look at the degree and not the A-levels. And if you have worked for a while, people are interested in your work experience and not the degree, A-levels or GCSEs. For example if you get C in Maths at GCSE and then an A at A-level. The C at GCSE will not count against you as you have surpassed it now with the A-level.
To get the job, I had to show my degree and having a good grade helped. I also had an interview and must have done well enough to get the job.

@charlotte: I only applied for my first engineering job after I had obtained my degree, so, no, I didn’t have to retake any subjects.

I didn’t have to re-take – but I didn’t study engineering when I was young so didn’t have an engineering degree. I started working in a place that does engineering, but I started working as someone who helps in the office – with computers and filing.

Later on after I’d made a good impression they trained me and a few years later they also paid for me to do a 3 year course in river engineering, which I finished just last year.
