This is a question which most people who are asked to work in Pakistan or Afghanistan ask themselves.

Am I frightened ? Probably not. Corncerned ? Definitely. I really don’t travel to such places to throw my life away so when working in those countries, I have always exercised great caution and I have always tried to follow sensible advice of the security coordinators of the United Nations.

The last time I visited Pakistan (after their devastating floods), I wanted to travel to the two areas for which I had responsiblity – Baluchestan and north of Gilgit in the Karakhoram Mountains, but I was forbidden by the United Nations to do so and had to operate the whole time from a telephone. As a result, I am still alive and available to do work in other areas still, if needed.
