Yes. I make sure that our designs are reliable, efficient and safe. The work that we do makes the life of the crews on the ships more comfortable and safe.
Yeah for sure. The improvements I think my projects have brought are that the River Thames is better for people who use it, whether you go for a walk, a cycle or boat down the river I think I’ve made it a little bit better!
I’ve also improved things for wildlife by restoring some rivers to a more natural state and also helped to stop a lot of people flooding through other work I’ve done.
I also do voluntary work with refugees – which is actually teaching them to play football – I think this has helped quite a few people begin to feel a bit more at home in the UK.
Yes, I do. In the 1980s around 12,000 children under 5 died every day from dirty water and poor or no sanitation. A lot of people have worked very hard to provide safe water and sanitary latrines to millions upon millions of people since then and, despite the population having grown by well over a third since the 1980s, only 6,000 children under 5 are dying every day now. Not only have the number of deaths dropped so much but so have the illnesses which can lead to death. In former times, cholera was the most dreaded disease because if you caught it, you were almost certain to die. Today, very few people who get cholera die of the disease. So, all of the work I (and many others) do has helped millions to lead better lives.
