@charlotte: I am not sure that one can compare different types of engineering to see if one is “better” than another. It’s almost like asking if bananas are better than oranges ? Alex’s engineering provides the ships to move things around the globe. Chris may be able to tell us something about what happened 400,000 years ago and how this could affect our present climate change. Harriet deals in sewage and purifying water supplies – something which is absolutely essential to us here in the UK. Jed’s got the dream job but one which is perhaps under-rated. If he can’t keep the Thames tame, where will London find itself next ? In Paris, perhaps ?
Each type of engineering is important for different reasons. I would be most unwilling to say that any one of them is “better” than another. Vote for them all !
The engineering I do, which is improving rivers in all sorts of ways for people and for wildlife, is probably not 100% essential – like say medical engineering is.
But perhaps the things that my type of engineering has is that it is all about rivers – and rivers are great! They are great places to spend time to relax and enjoy… so my engineering is really helpful in that sense. I can also help stop people flooding which is important in this country as there are something like 2 million homes at risk of flooding.
I agree. It is not possible to say that one type of engineering is more or less important than others. The great thing about engineering is that it is driven by a requirement. If something was not worth doing it would not be engineered. Besides a lot of what we do can be transfered from a product to a product, from one industry to another.
