• Question: If you were offerd a better job but not as a engineer would you take it.

      Yes. If it is actually better. If you just mean better paid than may be no. Depends what the job is. About three months ago I had an offer of a managerial position (change management) which would be related to engineering and slightly better paid than what I do now. But my choice was to follow the route of design engineering for two reasons: first I think it is simply more interesting and rewarding and second I think I will develop more useful skills here than in a managerial environment at the moment.

      Like Alex, it depends what you mean by better. As long as I get paid enough then money doesn’t really motivate me but there are things that I am really interested in that might pull me away from engineering.

      Hi, Lily: I very much doubt that I’d leave engineering except if I was offered a short term teaching post in maths. However, what is “better” ? Money doesn’t come into it at all and I’m quite happy with engineering at the moment.

      Well last year I worked as a manager of the lock keepers on the River Thames. The lock keepers are people who live next to the river and operate the locks to let boats pass through. They also maintain the river and operate weirs that are essential to keeping the water levels at the right level.

      I really enjoyed this job, but it didn’t have much engineering in it! So, yes if I could do something like that again I definintely would. But – the fact that I did that job last year was a result of me being a good engineer and doing well in my job at the moment, so it’s all linked up together really.
