You actually don’t need a degree to become an engineer – but it helps. I have worked with a number of engineers who have qualified by using the mature candidate route through the Institution of Civil Engineers, and who did not have a degree. There are a lot of different engineering degrees like BSc (Civil Eng); or BSc (Elec Eng); or BSc (Chem Eng); or BSc (Mech Eng) and so on. Take your pick for the career you would wish to follow. I have even worked with someone who only had a BSc degree in mathematics, and he was a water engineer. So, there are lots of different ways to get there.
For my job – the best would be civil engineering. But actually most people I work with don’t have that and have worked their way up to be engineers by starting at the bottom in a general office job. In fact this is what I did myself.
But – it would have been a lot easier if I had an engineering degree to start with!
