I would like to think that the work I do makes the world into a slightly better place than when I arrived in it – particularly for those less able to help themselves.

I learn a lot by doing my work. So there is a large personal achievement. I also hope that our clients get a good deal out of it. They get better ships for less money (if we do our work well). Speaking broadly, we keep the navy afloat and give the tax payer a better deal.

My work has improved many rivers over the years and I hope to carrying on doing that. The rivers are better for anyone that uses them, whether you are walking, cycling, in a boat or indeed if you are a fish swimming in the river! I’d like to do more of the work that improves things for wildlife as I think this is really interesting engineering as you have to try to do things so that it doesn’t look like there has been any engineering!
