The only “product” that I have as a water and sanitation engineer working abroad for poorer communities, is the “knowledge” that I leave behind me. Does this sound very grand ? Perhaps it does, but I have always believed that I am only effective if I have been able to train local people to do what I have done for them, completely by themselves after I have left.
If my “product” is good, the next time that community has a similar problem, they should be able to handle it without me. It is said that if you give someone a fish, you feed him for a day, while if you teach someone to fish for himself, he can feed himself for always. In the same way, if my “product” is good, I will have taught communities how to look after themselves.

The people I build things for is anyone who can enjoy the River Thames – and also you might argue people who can’t but know about it and like the idea of it.

In the past I’ve also built things like flood barriers that will help to stop people being flooded from rivers. This can make a big difference to people if their houses no longer get flooded.

My product is generally an engineering solution. Most often my products are used on building of fixing Royal Navy ships. Although sometimes it could be an oil rig or a nuclear power station.
