What doesn’t?! Nothing can last for ever so there are all sorts of fixings to do. Many vessels have a life span of 30-50 years. Imagine how many things you would change in a house in that period of time. And the sea is a harsh environment. During normal refit for a navy vessel for instance we would do the following:
Inspect the structure (hull plates, beams, bulkheads) and change those that are eroded, snapped, cracked or bent.
Refurbish most of the machinery: engines, pumps, compressors, reverse osmosis plants, sewage treatment plants, generators, valves, heat exchangers, refrigerators, capstans
Some of the pipework has to be changed because it is too corroded.
The kitchen and accommodation often get upgrades
Sometimes new equipment is added. This may create more heat in the compartments and require changes to the Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) system.
The hull gets repainted.
The propeller is either fixed or changed. Props always get eroded or chipped. Often we can rebuild the blades back, depending on how much is left.
