• Question: when you were younger, and you had to think about what you wanted to be when you were older, did anyone ever annoy you because you wanted to be an engineer ? if so, did it bother you ?

      Yes, I think my father got under my skin a bit when he suggested that I should go for science or engineering instead of letting me settle for farming. He was right, of course. I was one of five sons and he only had one farm – and as I wasn’t the oldest son. . . . . . . . .and I now know that I (and he) made the right decision.

      I don’t think anyone did. My family were quite happy with it. And my friends either thought that was great or didn’t care. Many of them would not want to do it themselves but didn’t try to stop me.

      My father tried to encourage me to work in a bank in the city of london – so that I would earn a massive pile of cash. I did got for an interview but it didn’t look like the type of job I would like – the guy who interviewed me looked like he had been awake for 3 nights and said to me, “You do know this is a very very hard job”. Working yourself to the bone for loads of money isn’t really what I want to do with my life!
