Question: During your work do you design machinery or do you just research how to make machinery for other people to design and make?

  I do some of both. I spend some time designing particular components – I’m designing a compressor wheel for a turbocharger at the moment – but I also work on technologies and methods for other people to use. That’s a bit like writing manuals of how to do something, someone needs to do it for the first time, then write down what they have done so that others can repeat it.
