It may seem a strange answer, but it’s not the technical part of the job that’s hardest, it’s managing people. Some engineers try to avoid that by staying in the technical side, but at some point, you usually have to take on management responsibility to progress any higher. That’s the most difficult transition to make, as it’s a completely different skill set. Engineering is based on the laws of physics, which don’t change. People change all the time which is what makes them difficult to understand.
I am working on some kit which no one has used before and has no good documentation so it has been frustrating to work with and difficult but persistence has prevailed and now I am the self proclaimed expert because no one else knows how to use it 🙂
