Often the most interesting thing in the kind of engineering work I do is understanding how things work, even when they are not `engineering’ things.
For example, I am currently involved in a project to study how ammonites (fossil shellfish) swam. This is so that biologists can study how they evolved. The swimming of ammonites is an `engineering’ problem because it depends on how they generated thrust, and how much power and energy (food!) they needed to do it, just like a submarine.
The main thing that makes my job interesting is the variation. There’s no such thing as a “typical” day, every day brings new challenges and new things to do.
I love the variety. I can go in to work one day and by the end of it my role and skillset will have evolved. Perfect it you enjoy a challenge and want to keep developing.
The subject of my work is what keeps me interested. Everyone has things which interest them and I recommend following their passions and find a career in that.
