Question: are there any more engineers in your family if there is is that why you wanted to be an engineer?if there is not why did you want to become an engineer?
Yes, both my parents are electrical engineers, so I kind of grew up with it. However, I can’t say that they pushed me to do engineering. They always motivated both my sister and I to go to uni, but they never pushed us towards a specific degree. I can’t really say that my parents being engineers steered me in a particular direction. However, I admire them both and they are one of my sources of inspiration.
No, I am the first one in my family to go to University. I loved maths and when i couldn’t get into medical school, i had to do something else so took up electronics with maths at university and loved it so continue on that path as an electrical engineer. I am also the eldest of my siblings so I am always setting the pace in my family and hoping they will follow.
There’s no engineers in my family – my mum is a teacher and my dad is a historian. They’re still not sure why I’m so good at Maths!
I wanted to be an engineer because of wonderful teachers I had who made science and technology really interesting and fun. They challenged me and really got me to think about problems (one of our teachers made us calculate the diameter of the Earth from using the shadow of a stick), and I realised I loved solving problems using the knowledge and skills I had. Engineering is very much problem solving!
