What i do is not for everyone. I have lived away from my home Monday to Friday (home at weekends only) for the past 20 years. I can’t have any pets and it makes relationships difficult. However this has been my choice and i am paid well to do this.
As a PhD student, I think I’m paid enough to live a comfortable life (i.e. I have enough for holidays, going out with friends and even saving). I could be earning a bit more if I was working in industry. However, like Zoe said, it was my choice to continue studying a bit more and I find my job very rewarding.
Yes, it’s enough for me. I live in my own flat and I have a car and a fancy coffee machine. I mean yes, I would prefer a mansion and a chauffeur and well, I still like my fancy coffee machine but I don’t need those things (apart from coffee, I definitely need coffee).
However, I would say that you don’t do engineering for the money. You do it because you like it.
There are better paid jobs out there. I studied Physics because I wasn’t always sure I wanted to be an Engineer and with Physics, you could go into banking or finance (which is very well paid). However, banking and finance is really, really boring and in my mind, you’re not doing anything real or productive or useful. It’s just a rubbish game of monopoly with other people’s money.
Engineering is fun! I build stuff, I break stuff, I make new materials, I get Fridays off!
I guess it depends on what is important to you. I have to say, Elon Musk is an Engineer and he’s one of the richest men in the world. Same as Bill Gates (he’s a software engineer).
Hi Pi,
I am definitely happy with what I get paid. I live ok and love my job. As Emma mentioned it depends on what is important to you. I get to do exciting and innovative things, push boundaries and help society. The satisfactory of that sometimes outweigh the paid.
However, one day some of the stuff I do may make me lots of money if it does I hope I will use it to further benefit society.
