      Intuition. If something doesn’t look right it probably isn’t. Nothing can beat knowledge, experience and engineering judgement.

      For me, it’s a ruler.

      My old boss gave me the advice ‘Measure Twice, Cut Once’ and it’s the best advice I’ve been given.

      Track Circuits or Axle Counters. They let us know where the trains are and can’t go wrong. This lets us have trains moving at 125mph only a few miles apart.

      Hi 776amph45,

      In my case, the most useful object is my sketch book! If I can’t sketch a design/idea and doesn’t make sense in a simple drawing, it is probably not a good design.

      After sketching, we used computarized tools (CAD) to get more accurate drawings and dimensions.
