Very good question. I’m afraid I don’t have a real in-depth knowledge of nuclear power plants so take this with a big pinch of salt because it really is just my opinion!
I think that they are an important energy source for sure and certainly preferable to fossil fuel power stations. I don’t like that we use Uranium instead of Thorium which was a decision based, in my opinion, on military grounds as you can’t blow people up with Thorium.
I would personally like to see more money being spent on really driving renewable energy sources forward.
So in conclusion I think that in the position we find ourselves in, yes, at least the new one being built is probably worth it. However, in the long term we should maybe not pay MPs quite so much, fight a few less wars over oil and put the money we save into developing truley sustainable energy.

Hmmm,
nuclear fusion ( joining atoms ) looks good, but is still experimental.
Fission (splitting atoms ) is old technology, but….works….
I was going to say NO don’t want them near me… then realised I’ve worked near 10 or 12 of the things for 20 yrs with no problems.
Am sat within a mile of at least 2 reactors during the webchats. within 15 miles of 5? ( DIDO, PLUTO, JET, to name the easy 3 ) maybe more when at home.
It’s not the technology, or the “nuclear” thing… it’s the people who run them that can be the problem.
