• Question: what different types of engineering involve art?

      I think many of us would argue that designing something to work seamlessly everytime is an art form in itself… but I think that when you start to design products that people will use, art enters it more. I really like working within the scientific research sector because so many bizarre and beautiful things are created. it might not be art in the traditional sense but I like it 🙂
      I will add that I took Art for GCSE and also started art at As Level but having taken it with Maths Physics and Chemistry it got dropped rather quickly…

      A lot of engineering involves art. The engineering that I do doesn’t involve much unless you are within building design. You use a computer now to create drawings of your designs but you have to ensure your presentation and creative skills are high to think about the perfect design.

      I think engineering should be a recgonised art form of it’s own, there are loads of iconic designs that are considered beautiful, ( eg Shard, Gerkin, Spitfire, E-type Jag…. ) so if that isn’t art, what is ?
      Tracey Emin made “art” out of an unmade bed, so hope for me yet !
      Some engineers use their skills to make art, either for thier own fun, or for sale.

      i am currently working with art on a bridge we are building over the river clyde, we are constantly thinking or our surroundings and how they can be included, such as adjacent to a park, a new home development, new sports arena for the Glasgow Commonwealth games. this is then going to be linked back to the lighting of the bridge and the sustainable material like using wood for the deck and handrail.
