• Question: What do you get out of engineering that you couldn’t get from any other kind of work? And why?

      rattyvlogger – where do you get these really challenging questions from ? 🙂 they are brilliant ! – From engineering I get a sense of helping other people, sense of satisfaction in a job well done, as well as a lot of skills I can take anywhere. ( I guess a Surgeon / Vet / Doctor would get the same feelings as long as all goes well. ) so, overall, I get a strong sense of self reliance, confidence, and an understanding of my perception of the World around me, as well as an understanding of how what I do affects that World.

      For me, I get to work on projects that blow my mind. I always loved science but could never quite see a career in it for me. Working as an engineer in STFC I actually do/get involved with a lot more science than many of my friends who studied science subjects at university. I certainly don’t know of any of them working with/at CERN anyway!
      It also gives me a great sense of pride in what I do and knowing that I am a small part of furthering the boundaries of technology and science.
      It has given me excellent opportunities along the way too, in both travel, practical skills, soft skills (communication, negotiation etc) and academic skills and qualifications. These have set me up into a very strong position where I am right now. Perhaps a different career may have offered me other things or even better things but would I be as happy…I’m doubtful.
