I applied for a summer research internship at my university for the 3D printing research group. During this time I built a hand that could be controlled by my muscles. A patient who has lost their hand, can still control the muscles in their forearm to a certain degree. The hand was then programmed to make different motions depending on how hard I clenched my fist.
They were pleased with my work which eventually lead me to where I am now as a post graduate researcher.
The key thing you need to do is make friends with teachers/lecturers. Due to their recommendations I have gotten this fantastic opportunity to build robot hands!
