      Hi Grace,

Our skin colour (or pigment) is determined by the amount of melanin produced by cells in our skin called melanocytes. Freckles are small clusters of melanocytes cells that produce melanin in higher concentrations – melanin absorbs light, which is why our freckles are more visible when it’s sunny.

Melanin is a pigment under your top skin layer. It helps to protect us from sun radiation along with other things in our skin. Melanin has a dark brown colour and sometimes it clumps under the skin, causing obvious visible spots on the skin and making some lucky people beautiful during the summer when the sun is brighter 🙂
