• Question: Do you have any experience with a partially self-driving car like the Tesla Model S or Model X? Do you think that within our lifetimes some more well-known household names will achieve AI capabilities like those of Tesla?

I haven’t been in one myself unfortunately. I have only seen videos and pictures of some friends being in a self-driving car. I think most of the technology is already there, so it’s only a matter of time before we get more and more self-driving cars in our streets. More car companies will have to put AI in their cars, because more and more people will want to buy them. There are still some open problems though, not so much with the technology (which is getting better every day), but more so with ethics and the law.

I have some experience of the AI methods used to drive autonomous vehicles, but I never worked on (or driven) one. I think that other car makers will definitively jump into AI for their own high end cars as soon as they can, because they don’t want to see customers going to a competitor and the technology is more or less there as Tesla demonstrates.

Expect to see expensive cars getting an AI first: developing this stuff is very expensive and they need to charge a customer a lot. Cheaper cars will get an AI once the way of developing one will be well assessed and therefore cheaper.

Yes, self-driving cars are great. My hope for them is that they will greatly reduce accidents on the road, improve bad traffic, and improve quality of life by removing stress from commutes.

We have devices today that are capable of more than a self driving car. Any smartphone, for example, or, if you have an Alexa or Google home.

I have only looked at the car, they had one here in Bath on display during the Digital Festival a couple of weeks back 🙂
I think there is great potential in this technology – as Rumman said, it can help reduce accidents and I would be very surprised if the other big companies are not looking into it as well. Before it is going to be useful for everybody, it will take some time, lots of testing. There are still too many flaws in the technology, for example, it has trouble when it rains which is not great news in England. But like with everything, the good you get out of it could be huge, the more data you have, the better it will get. So definitely within our lifetime, probably even quicker.
