By law, in UK every employer must give you about 23/25 holidays plus bank holidays and, in this Country, you spend them as you wish as long as you warn you boss long enough in advance. I take holidays in summer (I normally go back to Cosenza, my hometown, as the nearby area is a popular Italian holiday destination), during the Christmas period (I visit my parents in Italy), during Easter and in autumn (we go to my wife’s hometown of Riga in Lativa and some other destination). The company where I work allows you to accumulate any overtime work you did and claim an extra holiday a month. If you work really hard you could theoretically have up to 12 more holidays a year to spend as you wish (this happens to me rarely in practice because I have a family to attend and a PhD to finish). This option allows us to extend a bank holiday week (or just a week end) and enjoy little short breaks. I won’t be able to tell you how often we do it because we generally arrange this kind of holiday in the last moment. Some employers, like Universities, might give you even more than 23/25 holidays and other employers might ask you to take off Christmas period anyway since the work place is closed.
