I agree with you, and it’s our job to make sure women realise that it’s not true. There is no such thing as a man’s job, I want to hunt down the people that think that!! 🙂
I hope that is not the case. There are so many options for a career in engineering that it is almost impossible not to find something of interest for everybody. Some of the new areas that engineers are working in draw on diverse subjects. These are bioengineering (biology and engineering), software engineering (ICT and engineering), geoengineering (geography and engineering) and nanotechnology (engineering and very very tiny things!).
From my experience of engineering I think it’s not as popular for women as its not properly explained that engineering is what you make of it – and covers so many wide ranging topics!
It’s important for everyone to get good careers advice that clearly explains what careers are, and what the options are within that career – engineering is no different!
I think that the wide variety of engineering is not clearly explained to young people these days. Yes there probably are certain engineering jobs that would be considered more of a man’s job – how many women would want to spend there working lives in and around sewers for instance? But there are so many different engineering careers to choose from and explore, you may find that some areas of engineering are dominated by women!
Having said all that our engineering director is a woman and our head of engineering disciplines is a women. With hard work and dedication anyone can make it in engineer!
