It is! Because of computers, we can create more fancy and complicated buildings and bridges. We make 3d models in computers to help us design them.

      Hi Lena

      Great Question
Yes absolutely – IT and Technology help us incredibly, especially when needing to do analysis quickly.. but there is always a time when pen and paper is quicker.

Most ideas start out in ink 🙂

      Hi Lena

I think most engineers will use computers to do things for them – whether its fast calculations, drawings or just writing technical documents/reports.
Having said that – you have to know what you’re asking a computer to do – so I don’t think they’ll replace engineers – but they are definitely good tools to have to speed up some processes!

I think the role of computers is not starting but it is well established and ever changing. I use computers to do all sorts of things from communicating across the world to analysing data to marking exams. They are as important a tool as a screwdriver or hammer! I don’t know what I’d do without my laptop!

      Hello,

In the water industry, and more specifically where I work, computers are starting to really add value. We are currently trialling systems that allow us to remotely operate our treatment works! Considering that we have over 4,000 sites to operate this sort of technology is going to really help reduce our operating costs in the future.
These systems do come at a cost and require a new skill set from our Monitoring, Control & Automation engineers though. Engineers have to adapt to the new computer technology!

The humle pen and paper will stay around for a while yet though!

      Mark
