• Question: What was the most interesting experiment you have done ever?

      I shot microwaves at different types of film when I was doing a work placement as a student, that was good fun! I had to look at how hot the different types of film became- to see which was best to cook microwave pizza!

      The best experiment I ever did involved burning a small section of forest in the USA. This was to help us understand how forest fires move so that we can help firefighters put them out! It was hard working outside in -12C but the result was well worth it! We are now helping them predict how forest fires move around using computer programmes.

      At uni we built and raced a formula style racing car – we then experimented with different bodyshapes to understand how aerodynamics help the speed of the car – it was really cool and i even got to drive it 🙂

      I think my most interesting experiment is pump testing on live pumping stations. It’s fascinating to see how theory works in practice and how pumps deteriorate over time.

      Before I worked in engineering I saw a demo at Uni with two pieces of paper held at the top. The lecturer then blew between the sheets, the result was the two sheets of paper being drawn towards each other. It’s not what you expect, I like experiments that challenge / confuse the mind.

      Definately experimenting to see if a power station can start up with no external supplies.
      The power station shuts down completely, and then uses batteries to start up a small turbine on site which in turn starts up the main units.
      It’s a huge test to do – power stations are massive – and I’m writing the test documentation and carrying out tests on the units – amazing!
