I’d say Ada Lovelace – I know she’s often thought of as a mathematician and early programmer but her approach was so unique I’d definitely put her down as a problem solving engineer!
I think I might have to say Isambard Kingdom Brunel as one of the greatest too. I love the Clifton Suspension Bridge near Bristol which he designed and built.
More recently James Dyson has done a great job of improving many common gadgets such as vacuum cleaners and toilet hand driers. It is his desire to improve the small things in everyday life that make him so inspirational.
