Always as a team. Most engineering jobs are too big for one person to do on their own. I really like it, I know that there are always other engineers who can help me if I get stuck with anything and if I have ideas I have people to talk to about them!

Its a simple question! But it can be a complex answer!

The work I do each day varies so wildly, sometimes I’m working on it by myself… sometimes I’m working on it as part of a team…

but ultimately, if I’ve ever worked on something myself, behind the scenes (so to speak!) a team of guys have all made it happen; directing, checking, authorising and delivering!

I work as part of several teams (collaborations). Sometimes I work with other engineers (Electrical/Chemical/Civil/Mechanical) and sometimes I work with Surgeons, Phisiologists, Economists etc etc.

As part of my degree, I did courses in Law, Accouting, Business, Marketing etc – these were all to prepare me for the multi-disciplinary environment engineers work in. It is really important that we try to understand the needs of everyone you work with.

I work as a member of many teams and lead many others. For example, I supervise the work of 6 PhD students. This is a great responsibility as I’m really training future scientists. Think of it like an apprenticeship to become a scientist. I also teach and have to report to a senior member of staff in the University who coordinates the School’s degree programmes.
