At the moment, I’ve got people from the commercial team asking me about costs for engineering things because I can understand the technical aspects as well the money side of things.

Most of my colleagues are older than me – so I end up helping them with how to use their phones and laptops too :).

I have a research team with about 8 engineers – we work together to come up with solutions to problems. Mostly, it will be about a design approach or what experiments they need to do. I’ve a few years more experience than they do, so that helps – but really just “talking-out” the problem is the most helpful part!

Sometimes, neither of us know what to do, but by chatting, we always figure out the next step!

On the technical side, they ask about assessing buildings for how environmentally friendly they are.
On the personal side, they ask about dealing with mental health issues as, following my own depression, I’ve become a champion in my company.

All my software is open source and is available through the internet. So I get asked for advice about how to modify the software for different engineering applications. The requests can be from Universities or people working in companies. Sometimes they give me funding for particular projects. Last night, I had dinner with an engineer from NASA on a US aircraft carrier. We talked about using supercomputers to design satellites and space craft.
