  The secret to avoiding emergencies is to have a good plan of what you’re going to do and a good analysis of all the risks – so that the unexpected does not happen!
  
  Also, try to find a much older, more experienced engineer to be your guide and mentor.

  Haven’t had too many of those at work thankfully. We plan things as carefully as humanly possible to avoid surprises!
  
  I have some ’emergencies’ and ‘surprises’ outside of work! I’ve almost missed my flights a few times… I solve that by running through the airport and convincing people to let me go in front of them in the queues!

  Glad to say I’ve never had to deal with an emergency. Good engineering design will avoid emergencies.
  
  Surprises however are an everyday occurance. Research is all about surprises. When we are trying to figure stuff out we establish theories and design experiments to test these theories. I’m nearly always surprised that my theories aren’t right (in fact maybe it’s not much of a surprise anymore 🙂 ) . But surprises are interesting and normally ask as many questions as they answer. It’s what leads to discovery.
