I’d like to think I do this every day (as a University lecturer :)). But I suppose most of the time we teach theory and encourage skill development. I think engineers learn by doing…so we get our students to be engineers from day 1. Most recently, I had groups of students design motor boats and it is really nice to see the theory turn into practice. I think the key is to advise, ask the right questions (e.g. you think that’ll float?, have you considered using polystyrene instead of lead?) and help students to “figure it out” themselves; that way the skill in acquired through experience.
I’ve been teaching my engineering co-workers about 3D printing and how that all works, so that they can come up with ideas for where we can use it in our work.
