At school, sometimes I was top in the year for a subject, but not every year and not for all subjects. It has never mattered in my career or when applying for a job.
I think how you are as a person is much more important. In work, there are teams of people who have different types of personalities and skills. This can be important as somebody might like a task that somebody else would hate.
I can’t remember if we had sets for science at school but I did get A* at GCSE for Dual Award science. I went on to get a D at physics for A-level though!
