My Work
Connecting the world subsea!

My main role is project engineer for a company that provides equipment to vessels/ cable manufacturers to lay subsea cables for power and telecommunications and umbilicals for the oil and gas industry.
My job starts at the very beginning of the project to work with the design engineers to make sure everything fits together with the customer and make sure equipment is made as they want it!
Once the design is completed, i move onto the manufacturing stage (making it) and visit our suppliers often to ensure the design is being made properly!
The installation and commissioning stage is my favourite this is where we get to put everything together on the ship and i spend a lot of time onboard the ship/ in the shipyard to look after the project and see the everything actually moving and working as described on paper!
I also help the aftersales and service team by actioning requests or questions about the equipment once we have delivered it and it has been doing its job. This is even more interesting because you find all the things that go wrong after you thought it worked!
The whole process normally lasts around 2-3 years which may sound like a long time but that is why i love my job! with a constantly changing day, it always feels new!
I will actually be in Sri Lanka commissioning equipment during this event!

My Typical Day: Every day varies! Tackle it as it comes!

My typical day is totally varied depending on the stage the project is at!
During the design phase i am always visiting the design engineers to help solve problems and make sure everything is on time. I have learned biscuits help!
During the manufacturing stage, i am normally found at the factory answering any questions the builders have on how to make and assemble the equipment.
Things are never as they are on paper and during installation and commissioning I am in full PPE (Safety clothing) and working with the site teams to solve any issues and get them anything they need to get it working! While it may sound amazing to work in the likes of Norway, Sri Lanka and South Korea, I forget that wearing boots, overalls, hard hat and eye protection in the different weather conditions has it moments!

What I'd do with the money
Provide the same opportunities to those not able to access

I’d like to make the money available for people who are less fortunate in being able to access the privileges that we take for granted.
I was lucky to have a schools that had access to computers and science experiments as a kid to just investigate and understand how things reacted or came together.
From my travels i have visited places where this is just not the case and the children grow up thinking that STEM subjects are elite and “not for them”.
