Good question,
Yes, when we’re working on something that goes in the human body, there’s a risk that something might go wrong that could harm the patient.
There are all sorts of rules and regulations to ensure this doesn’t happen – for example, if I were to design a new ankle replacement – I would have to conduct lots of testing in the laboratory to prove that it would work – that it wouldn’t break or wear out… and I couldn’t just decide what tests I wanted to do – there are people that set the standards that devices have to meet.
This really does minimise the risks to the patients. There is a risk that things might go wrong, and certainly some treatments don’t work for all patients, but the aim is to make these treatments work as well as possible for as many people as we can.
