Lego kicked it all off for me. It helped my creativity when I was really young building things out of different coloured blocks, when I became a teenager playing with Lego technics taught me how things like cranes, gearboxes, pneumatics, etc. worked.
Also being hands on and being able to break apart, reassemble and fix things helps understanding of spacial awareness and 3D shapes. I wish more of school was spent drawing and building things!
There are really cool sets now like Lego Mindstorms (http://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/?domainredir=mindstorms.lego.com) where you can build and program robots which teach you about software, I wish they were about when I was younger! Also I reckon if I was a kid now I’d be playing computer games like Minecraft which fulfils a similar job to Lego… but is a lot cheaper!
I still treat myself to the occasional Lego set, the last one I got was a Ghostbusters set
