I left school at 16… studied day release (one day a week at college whilst I was an apprentice) I studied electrical and electronics (BTEC ONC and HNC)… I then did an extra year HND…. I was then a Maintenance Electrician….
I then studied another 4 years gain part time (day release – 1 day and a night class) in Mechatronics….with my experience at work I was then able to apply and gain the status of Chartered Engineer….
I then studied again a few years later for my Masters – another 3 and half years…. you never stop learning !!!
Typically a full-time engineering degree is four years at university. That’s what I did and found it beneficial. We did some practical work during the degree, and internships over the summers, so by the end we felt ready to enter the working world.
It is also possible to become an engineer as an apprentice. This means on-the-job training, so you get paid from the start. I’m not sure how long this takes though.
Hi Katie and Megan,
Most engineering degrees are 3 or 4 years depending on whether you do a year getting work experience or go on to complete a Masters. Some people take alternative route, like becoming an apprentice and I think in this case the number of years can vary a lot.
