Hi… yes Engineers are involved in every aspect of designing, building, or maintaining engines, machines, or structures…

The subject of “Engineering” covers aspects of everything that has ever been invented and or made… !

      Hi!

Wow that’s a big question! As Simon said, engineers definitely do all those things you mentioned… and many other things!

I would say engineers are great designers and problem solvers. We see a problem, we come up with a solution. It may be that we need a way to cross a river so we design a bridge; or a person has his leg amputated and still wants to be able to walk, so we design a prosthetic leg.

In medical engineering a common phrase that has started to be used is “personalised medicine”. That means that the solution is tailored directly for the individual – their medical treatment is chosen based on information in their genome. But I think it describes how engineers work. They design a solution to a specific solution. For example, you may need surgery on your heart. We can now image your body using MRI (machine designed by engineers and physicists), and then create a 3D computer model of your heart (software developed and designed by engineers), and then work out the method of surgery that would be best for your heart (engineers again – mathematical optimisation). Engineering is usually involved somewhere along the way!

      Hi there,
Simon and Rebecca have both answered this question very well! Engineering goes way beyond engines, machines and structures to almost everything we interact with in our daily lives.
